Traditional highlights are applied with foils, placed close to the root line and are used to create high-impact dimension. Highlights require regular touch ups to avoid harsh lines as roots grow in. Baby lights are used to create dimension in the hair by lightening extremely small sections of hair. Baby lights result in subtle, naturally sun kissed looking hair. Lowlights use a similar technique to highlights, but with the opposite results: a darker color is applied to sections resulting in deeper tones that provide depth and dimension to the overall look.
The balayage technique does not involve foils but instead the lightener is painted directly onto the hair. The balayage highlights are less saturated and appear more natural against your original hair color. Foilyage is similar to the balayage, but the sections of hair are wrapped in foil, heat is then applied to amplify the lifting-effect of the highlights. The ombre is characterized by dark roots that gradually get lighter towards the ends. Ombre colors can also be reversed to graduate hair from light roots to darker ends.
